You have to appear/pass Six compulsory subjects and three optional subjects to be selected from any one group.  I am myself AMIE CSE completed in 2013, My Optional subjects were CP 412 Computer Networks, CP 413 Operating Systems and CP 415 Database Management Systems.

Planning and Strategy:- CP 413 Operating Systems is very interesting and core subject of Computer Science, its very interesting and you must study thoroughly for better grip on the computer science core fundamentals. My strategy for studying the subject Operating Systems is by buying a suitable text book (I have studied Modern Operating Systems by AS Tanenbaum book) its good book and sufficient for this subject. There are other books also recommended by IEI, which are also great. Check the books mentioned at the end of the post.

It covers the entire syllabus, read it thoroughly, buy solved question papers book from Jain Brothers. Download excellent study notes (large database of study notes/lecture notes available in internet .ppt and .pdf files which are used by faculty in universities to teach their students) from following links for revision and lastly NPTEL Video courses for the subject.
